Vilnius University (VU) Chamber orchestra (artistic director Modestas Jankūnas) and the Brussels Choir "Lassenne Vocale" (artistic director Ivan Yohan) present the concert "Body&Soul", in which Steve Dobrogosz's jazzy "Mass" will be played. The concert will take place on May 4, at 7 p.m., in Vilnius St. John's Church.
Unconventionally written for mixed choir, piano, and string orchestra, Steve Dobrogosz's Mass is an original chamber music piece with romantic and jazz influences. In the mass, the religious text and the intonations of human feelings and passion are intertwined. A version of this piece for mixed choir, piano and string orchestra will be presented on May 4 at 7 p.m. St. John's Church in Vilnius, and the piano part will be performed by pianist Eglė Andrejevaitė.
The concert will also feature works by Gustav Holst, Charles William Stanford, and Ivan Yohan, exploring the theme of the human body and soul.
The title of the concert promises a journey in both the physical and spiritual realms of being, and the selected compositions beautifully embody this duality. Gustav Holst's "St. Paul's Suite" will evoke a sense of vitality and movement - it resonates with the physical aspect of our being. Meanwhile, Holst's "Evening Watch" and Charles Villiers Stanford's "Beati quorum via" delve into the ethereal realm, offering moments of introspection and spiritual reflection. Ivan Yohan's Agnus Dei and Après un rêve will further deepen this exploration, mixing elements of sacred and secular beauty to touch the essence of human longing and transcendence. At the end, Steve Dobrogosz's Mass will provide a unifying force that connects earthly and divine threads, ultimately guiding listeners on a profound journey of body and soul.
