Flowing continues,
Yet perhaps at times –
Since all has already been created –
One may rest –
Not see the sharp edges of spaces;
Sense the pleasant waves of sound,
With the whole body,
Touch silicon’s smooth surface –
Then the prophecies might ease too.
They no longer preach about our counted days or the fall of kingdoms.
Only simple words remain in their place.
As if nothing special has happened.
On the 16th of December and the 4th and 18th of January, Vilnius University Centre of Culture invites you to the Church of St. Johns to see the space in a completely new light, to experience it through new sound as well as in virtual reality. Vilnius Academy of Arts students Dominyka Balaišytė, Gailė Cijūnaitytė and Nidas Kaniušas presents the creative works which they’ve been developing in the laboratories for science and art since last spring. The exhibition is curated by Akvilė Anglickaitė, who is herself participating in it.
In the spring of 2019, VU Centre of Culture initiated a collaborative art and science project, whose aim was to set up the right conditions for the encounters between scientists and students from different fields, allowing them to acquire unique experiences in applied sciences and interdisciplinary arts. The organisers invited the scientists and researchers to participate in creative labs together with the students from Photography and media arts department at the Vilnius Academy of Arts. The students analysed the possibilities of contemporary technologies for lighting from an artistic perspective, while the scientists sought to find the technological solutions and carry out the proposed visual ideas.
The Church of St. Johns in Vilnius, its architecture and the context of the spaces themselves were the basis for the research in order to create authentic audio-visual and virtual experiences. This project is the first attempt to combine sound, contemporary technologies and visual arts into a performative whole.
The project is partly funded by the Ministry of Education, Science and Sport of the Republic of Lithuania.
